10 Must-Know Tips Before You Travel to Murchison Falls National Park
Planning a visit to Murchison Falls National Park? You’re in for a memorable adventure! Located in the northern end of the Albertine Rift Valley, it is Uganda’s largest and oldest conversation area, offering its visitors breathtaking landscapes and an opportunity to see Uganda’s incredible wildlife. Check out some of these must-knows before you embark on your journey.
The Spectacle of Murchison Falls.
The falls are the park’s crown jewel, squeezing through a narrow 6-metre gorge and plunging 45 meters, creating a powerful waterfall that is a must-see. The thunderous roar of the water and the mist that rises as the river crashes down into the gorge is a natural spectacle. To get the best view, we recommend taking a boat trip along the Nile or enjoy brunch on top of the falls.
Game Drive: Wildlife in Abundance
The northern section of the park teems with wildlife. The savanna landscape is home to 76 species of mammals, including elephants, giraffes and lions. Keep your eyes peeled for the iconic Uganda kob. For bird lovers, the park is a haven, boasting over 451 bird species, including shoebills, which are a favourite for birdwatchers.
Activities to Immerse You in Nature
To make the most of your experience, immerse yourself in Nile Safari Lodge’s activities like the 45-minute sunset cruise, where you’ll enjoy the beauty of the Nile at dusk, the early morning or late afternoon private game drives in an exclusive 4×4 vehicle. Opt for something a little different with Chimpanzee trekking through Budongo Forest and relax with a Bush breakfast, community walks or try your luck with fishing.
Best Time to Visit
While Murchison Falls National Park can be visited year-round, the dry seasons from December – February and June to September present better opportunities as the animals gather around water points. If you’re a bird watcher, consider January and March when birth activity is at its peak.
Getting to the Park
By road, the park is approximately 5 5-hour drive through Masindi – Kichumbanyobo Gate – Mubako Gate, while by air from either Entebbe International Airport or Kajjansi to Murchison Falls National Park is approximately 45 minutes. The closest Airstrips are Bugungu Airstrip and Pakuba Airfield.

What to Pack
These should be on your must-have checklist. Light clothing because the daytime temperatures often range from 25°C to 32°C, but it can get more relaxed at night. Sunscreen and hats because the sun can be a little intense during the game drive. Since you’ll be near water, insect repellent is a must and, of course, a camera to capture the stunning landscapes and close encounters with wildlife.
Respect for Nature
Please note the park is not a tourist destination but a vital conservation area. Visitors are encouraged to respect the environment by following park rules and designated paths and avoiding loud noises that can disturb the animals. Resist the temptation of feeding the animals.
Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or it’s your first safari, Murchison Falls National Park has something for everyone. From the thunderous roar of the Falls to the peaceful savanna plains, the park is a place of natural beauty and wildlife wonder. So pack your bag and bring your sense of adventure.
